SEEKONK, Mass. – Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby finished 14th in the Open Wheel Wednesday spectacular at Seekonk Speedway on Wednesday night, June 29, racing with the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series. Coby was third fastest in the scuff session prior to qualifying, which lined up the No. 10 Mayhew Tools entry to start fourth in his qualifying heat. Coby would finish third – giving him a 10th place starting spot for the 100-lap, $10,000 to win main event. At the drop of the green, Coby worked his way up into the top-five, and rode there for the first half of the race. However, just past halfway, Coby fell to the bottom of the top-10 and decided it was time to enter the pits for a fresh tire. Upon adding the new tire on the car, Coby was able to come from 20th back up through the pack to finish 14th after 100 laps. “I thought we were going to be ok,” Coby said. “For some reason, under every caution, the car just got evil and it was evil for more and more laps with every caution. We were quick at times today, and hanging on at other times. We have to thank Mayhew Tools and all of our supporters for making it happen for Doug Coby Racing.” Doug Coby will return to the track at New Hampshire Motor Speedway with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour on Saturday, July 16, driving the Mayhew Tools No. 10. MILFORD, Conn. – Doug Coby will return to the seat of the No. 10 Mayhew Tools Modified this Wednesday night, June 29, for a mid-week show in Massachusetts. The six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion will compete with the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series in the $10,000 to win Open Wheel Wednesday at Seekonk Speedway, where he is a three-time winner. Coby won the prestigious event in 2011, 2013 and 2016 – most of them in dominating fashion. Last year, he chased the back bumper of Matt Hirschman early and elected to pit for a fresh tire, but couldn’t get back to the front. The strategy will play a role once again this year – with one fresh Hoosier Racing tire in the pit area for drivers to change if they wish. Coby is also excited to get back to work with new Doug Coby Racing crew chief John McKenna, who has a history of winning at Seekonk. “I feel like you’re likely not going to win this race if you pit,” Coby said. “The only reason we pitted last year is we knew we weren’t going to win the race if we stayed out. It always seems like whenever I pit, there are never enough cautions to get back to the front. The strategy usually needs to be to have a fast enough car to run good in the heat race and get a good starting spot and be there at the end. At the end of last year, we were just getting our groove back together with John when we raced the Haunted Hundred at Seekonk. We’re going to take what we learned last year to make some adjustments to go back.. If anyone knows how the car should look and act, it’s John. He can almost tell me everything before I tell him.” The Seekonk race day schedule includes one practice session from 3:45-4:30 p.m., followed by the tire scuffing session at 5:15 p.m. Qualifying heats will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the 100-lap race set to begin around 8:30 p.m. All tickets are available in advance at SeekonkSpeedway.com and will also be sold at the track. For those who can’t make it, the race will air live on FloRacing.TV. RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby captured a 10th place finish on Saturday, June 25 at Riverhead Raceway. Competing for Tommy Baldwin Racing in the Buzz Chew 200, Coby qualified 10th, and ran inside the top-10 for the duration of the race, finishing right where he started. The run for Coby and Baldwin together marked their fourth top-10 finish in four races this year. Through seven NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races, Tommy Baldwin Racing leads by 22 points in the owners championship standings, as the series hits the halfway point of the season in their next event. The top-10 finish at Riverhead came in the second of three races at the New York bullring in 2022. Mayhew Tools joined the famed No. 7NY for this special event. “We just missed things a little bit in qualifying which caused us to start 10th,” Coby said. “And we had a good enough car to come up from 10th to third, but I got pinned on the bottom on a restart and maybe used up a little bit of what I had. We certainly didn’t have the car with the same forward drive we had in May, and that’s just a product of a couple of small adjustments that we maybe needed to make, and the track being a little bit different with how they prep the surface.” Doug Coby will return to the track at Seekonk Speedway with the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series on Wednesday, June 29. Coby will look to add a fourth career victory in the $10,000 to win Open Wheel Wednesday. For more information on Doug Coby Racing, visit DougCobyRacing.com and follow the team on Facebook. Coby Looks For Second Straight Riverhead Win with TBR in Buzz Chew 200; Welcomes Mayhew Tools To 7NY6/23/2022 By Souza Media/Kyle Souza
MILFORD, Conn. – After years of coming close, Doug Coby finally broke into NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Victory Lane at Riverhead Raceway last season. His first Riverhead win seemed to open the flood gates – as the Milford, Connecticut, six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion has won three of the last four races at the track. In the only other event, he was racing at the front early before contact sidelined him from the race. This Saturday night, Coby will pair with Tommy Baldwin Racing for the fourth time this season, returning to Riverhead – the site of their victory in May in their first race together. Overall, Coby has three wins in 23 Riverhead starts, leading 702 laps and posting top-10 finishes in 14 efforts. The 2022 Riverhead win sparked a run of success for the team – including a win at Lee USA Speedway in the next race with Coby driving and one at Jennerstown Speedway with Mike Christopher Jr. behind the wheel. Coby drove the car in last weekend’s Duel at the Dog 200 at Monadnock Speedway and scored a fifth-place finish, continuing impressive momentum as a team. Coby will welcome longtime sponsor Mayhew Tools, based in Massachusetts, to the Tommy Baldwin Racing entry for the Buzz Chew 200-lap race. “I feel like every time I go there I’m learning more and more about the track,” Coby said. “It feels like it’s more of a level playing field since they paved the corners. I know what I need to have during the day in practice so we can have a good car at night during the race and go out there and do what we need to do. You have to qualify well, stay up front, and stay out of trouble. You have to save your tires and make sure you are there at the end. I’m excited for another race with Tommy Baldwin Racing and also excited to welcome Mayhew Tools to the car for this race.” Fans who will not be able to make it to the track can watch the race live on FloRacing.TV. Tickets will be available at the track for those who will be in the area. For more information on Tommy Baldwin Racing, visit the team on Facebook. WINCHESTER, N.H. – Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby scored a fifth-place finish at Monadnock Speedway on Sunday, June 19. Coby, driving the famed 7NY for Tommy Baldwin Racing, ran inside the top-five for the duration of the race. Coby passed Justin Bonsignore and took second spot in the first half of the race, but fell back to the middle of the top-five, where he rode for most of the Duel at the Dog 200. In the end, Coby settled for fifth position. It marked the third straight top-five run for Coby and Tommy Baldwin Racing as a combination, with the first two events ending in Victory Lane. Tommy Baldwin Racing has now finished inside the top-five in the last four Whelen Modified Tour races. “I feel like I’ve done this before running between third and fifth at Monadnock and have a strong car, and then the last 50 or so laps everyone’s setup goes away, but we go away a tick more than the leaders,” Coby said. “What we learned at Riverhead and Lee together really doesn’t translate to this track during the day. It’s tough when you have a tight race car on a greasy track. It was a good day, just not a winning day.” Doug Coby will return to the track next Saturday, June 25, at Riverhead Raceway for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour 200 with Tommy Baldwin Racing. Coby won the first tour stop at Riverhead in May in his first race together with the team in 2022. MILFORD, Conn. – Doug Coby and Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR) will continue their partnership this weekend at Monadnock Speedway, when Coby wheels the No. 7NY in the Duel at the Dog 200. Coby was tabbed to drive the car at Riverhead Raceway and Lee USA Speedway last month, and in the first two starts together as a combination, the team went to Victory Lane. Since then, Mike Christopher Jr. has also driven the car to the victory at Jennerstown Speedway, meaning Tommy Baldwin Racing has won the last three Whelen Modified Tour events. On top of winning, TBR also leads the championship owner point standings after five events. Coby, a six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion, was only planning on running select events with his personal race team this year, but is excited to return to the seat for Baldwin this weekend. The 200-lap event at Monadnock will come with no pit stops, meaning tire conservation and patience will be crucial to success. At Riverhead, Coby was the dominant force in that 200-lap event. At Lee, he rocketed to the lead in dominating fashion again to take a second straight win. In his career at Monadnock, the Milford, Connecticut, native has one victory in seven previous starts and has been top-five in all but two efforts at the Winchester, New Hampshire oval. “I’m certainly happy to be back in the car,” Coby said. “Tommy Baldwin has two opportunities to win Saturday, with my car and Jimmy Blewett driving the No. 1 for him. It’s a chance to extend the streak. Monadnock is an awesome little technical track, where you have to be smart, smooth and consistent and repeat that and do it over and over again for the whole race. It seems like as the race goes on, you can move around and use different parts of the track to get the car to turn. It’s a fun place.” Saturday’s race day schedule at Monadnock includes one practice session from 2-3 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools Dominator pole qualifying at 5 p.m. The estimated drop of the green flag for the Duel at the Dog 200 is scheduled for 8:30 p.m., live on FloRacing.TV. MILFORD, Conn. – Fresh off two straight NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour wins with Tommy Baldwin Racing, Doug Coby will strap back in behind the wheel of his own No. 10 Mayhew Tools Modified this Friday night. Set to compete in the $15,000 to win Racing Guys 100 at Claremont Motorsports Park, Coby heads to New Hampshire looking to collect the big check in the second race of the season for Doug Coby Racing. Although the Milford, Connecticut, native has only raced at Claremont once – over 12 years ago – he is prepared to battle for the prize in a competitive field of talent. Names like Matt Hirschman, Woody Pitkat, and some of New Hampshire’s top local Modified stars will be competing in the 100-lap race. “Like a lot of the other New Hampshire short tracks, Claremont is a technical place,” Coby said. “It’s a place where you can be easily baited into overdriving and charging the corners and killing the speed in the car. You have to make sure you get your angles right for the corners and don’t abuse the tires. Just like in any open modified race, you have to be aware of how the race is unfolding with strategy. We’re going to have to decide if we can go the whole race on the same set of tires, or if we need to come in and get the tire. I’ve seen races where people stay out and win without pitting, and others where people pit and charge through the field.” Coby is excited to get back with his Doug Coby Racing team for open modified competition after competing on the Whelen Modified Tour and is hoping to carry some momentum from his victories into Claremont. “It’s been an interesting start to the season, being two more races in than I had originally planned,” Coby said. “I think as a team we were disappointed with how the Spring Sizzler at Stafford unfolded in April, and then I went and won two races with Tommy Baldwin and his team. Excited to get back to work with the Mayhew Tools guys this Friday night.” Friday’s race day schedule at Claremont includes practice beginning at 4 p.m., followed by the green flag for qualifying heats at 7 p.m. On top of the Modifieds, Claremont’s Late Model Sportsman, Mini Stocks, Six Shooters and Pure Stocks will also be in action. All tickets will be available at the track, and the race will also air live on RacingAmerica.TV for fans who can’t make it to the track.
