SEEKONK, Mass. -- Doug Coby took a gamble on Wednesday, August 25 at Seekonk Speedway, pitting from the second spot during a caution on lap 57 for a fresh Hoosier racing tire, and he couldn’t quite charge all the way back to the front before the finish. In the Speed51.TV Modified Madness -- the 16th annual Open Wheel Wednesday -- Coby spent the final 43 laps climbing through traffic and finished eighth in the Tri Track Open Modified Series special. The race was originally scheduled for June 30, but delayed two months due to a power outage in the area on that night. In the end, Coby chased the back bumper of eventual Matt Hirschman for the first 57 laps, but felt like he needed to do something different in order to have a shot at winning. Both Hirschman and Coby entered the race as the only three-time winners of the prestigious event -- with Hirschman grabbing his fourth, and Coby coming home eighth. “I could run second but I wasn’t going to pass him where I was,” Coby said. “I was running a different line than him, but I don’t think I was going to get by him. I knew when we were coming into the pits we were kind of giving up our chance to win, barring the right cautions, and restart positions. But at this point, we were here to win. I don’t think we were going to beat Matt running second, but I think if there was some better traffic there, I could have got up there better than eighth. We came to win, tried our best.” Doug Coby will return to racing action on Saturday, September 4 at Oswego Speedway with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. MILFORD, Conn. -- Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby is no stranger to success in Open Modified competition. Coby is a three-time winner of Seekonk Speedway’s Open Wheel Wednesday, and this Wednesday, August 25, he looks to become the first four-time winner in the 16-year history of the $10,000 to win event. Coby will drive the No. 10 Mayhew Tools/Reynolds Auto Wrecking entry in the Speed51.TV Modified Madness with the Tri Track Open Modified Series. The event was originally slated for June 30, but shortly after qualifying was complete on that night, a power outage in the area forced the postponement of the event to this week. With qualifying already complete, Coby will start in the seventh position after winning his qualifying heat and earning $300 in the Pepsi Challenge back in June. Coby is coming off a fifth-place finish at Beech Ridge with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour last weekend. Veteran Matt Hirschman is the only other three-time winner of the event, and Coby knows that Hirschman will be one of his major challengers. “I like this race and this car has been really good for us with pretty much a lock for the top-five everywhere we have been,” Coby said. “We have our strategy in advance, and we know when we ideally want to do things -- but Matt is really good. I know I have won this race three times, and I have success at Seekonk, but he’s still the car to beat. We’re looking forward to it.” The schedule includes practice from 5:30-6:10 p.m., followed by the drop of the green flag for the 100-lap feature around 7:30 p.m. The NEMA Lites and 350 SMAC Supermodifieds will also be in action. All tickets and pit passes that were purchased for the original Wednesday, June 30, date, will be honored on Wednesday if the ticket holder still has them in their possession. Additional tickets will also be available at the track for purchase for those who couldn’t make it the first time. The race will also be live on Speed51.TV via PPV for those who can’t make it. SCARBOROUGH, Maine. -- Doug Coby rebounded from an early spin and scored a fifth-place finish on Saturday, August 21 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. In the 10th race of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season -- the Rumble at the Ridge 200 -- Coby qualified the Mayhew Tools machine in fourth spot, and ran inside the top-five for most of the race. However, after staying out when a few others pitted early, Coby faded towards the bottom of the top-10, and slight contact with another driver sent him spinning on the frontstretch. After having to drive from the tail of the field, Coby charged back to the front, and ran inside the top-five late, settling for fifth at the checkered flag. “Good recovery for us. We just over-adjusted on the initial start thinking we needed to be tight for a long run and we guessed wrong,” Coby said. “When we came in for a fresh tire at the end, we loosened the car up, but it was still a little bit too tight. When you’re tight on a track that has no true straightaways like Beech Ridge, it’s tough. I was just hugging the bottom at the end. It wasn’t what we thought we would have been, but really, in the first time here recently for everyone, no one really knew what the right thing to do was. There were a lot of strategies.” Doug Coby will return to the track with the Whelen Modified Tour on Saturday, September 4 at Oswego Speedway in New York. The next race for Doug Coby Racing is set for Seekonk Speedway on Wednesday, August 25, in the Speed51.TV Modified Madness, worth $10,000 to the winner. Coby will wheel the No. 10 Reynolds Auto Wrecking/Mayhew Tools machine from the seventh starting position in the 100-lap race. MILFORD, Conn. -- Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby is set to get back to work this weekend, this time at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Maine. In the Whelen Modified Tour’s first stop at the third-mile since 2005, Coby may have an advantage over the rest of the field, as he is one of only two drivers entered to have previous tour laps at the track. In three previous attempts, all between 2003-2005, Coby had a best finish of 12th. He enters the race sixth in the championship standings, 75 from the lead, but only 19 points out of third. The goal for the remainder of the season will be to try and win as many races as possible. Coby won the first two events at Riverhead Raceway in New York, and will look forward to attempting the sweep there in September. For now, he’s excited to get back to Beech Ridge. “I did run there before but I’m not sure what this track will be all about with the current tires and the current setups we run, but we will all find out together,” Coby said. “It’s a big, round, flat, circle. When I first ran there, I used to run the track like I ran Seekonk Speedway, but now I’ve learned how to run Seekonk, and it might change how I run Beech Ridge. Ultimately, it’s going to come down to tire management and the pit stops. We’re really going to be side-by-side a lot of the time and it makes it hard to make up ground or pull away from each other.” The Beech Ridge event will begin a busy stretch for Coby, who will compete in seven races over the next six weeks. Events will include a return to Seekonk Speedway with the Tri Track Open Modified Series on August 25, four more Whelen Modified Tour events and his debut at Bristol Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with GMS Racing on September 16. Saturday’s schedule at the track includes one practice session from 2:50-3:50 p.m., followed by an autograph session with the fans behind the grandstands at 5:30 p.m. Mayhew Tools Dominator Pole qualifying will take place at 6:30 p.m., followed by the drop of the green flag in the Rumble at the Ridge 200 at 7:30 p.m. For those who can make it, general admission and pit pass tickets will be available at the track. For those who can’t make the track, you can watch the race live on TrackPass via NBC Sports Gold. The race will also air via tape-delay on NBCSN on Sunday, August 29. Statesville, NC -- When six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby makes his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut at Bristol Motor Speedway next month, a familiar sponsor and colors will be on his No. 24 GMS Racing Chevrolet Silverado.
Doug Coby will carry the Mayhew Tools name in a special American Flag style paint scheme that mirrors the scheme he runs for his own race team on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Mayhew Tools, a company based in Turner Falls, Massachusetts, has been a sponsor of Coby’s Modified efforts since 2017. Coby, who has two Whelen Modified Tour wins to date during the 2021 season, and also a victory in the inaugural Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) event at Stafford Motor Speedway, is excited to showcase the colors and sponsorship to the Truck audience in his debut. “It’s exciting for me because Mayhew Tools stepped up to help Mike Smeriglio’s team on the Whelen Modified Tour when I was driving for him, and they stood behind me when I started my own team,” Coby said. “They help me with whatever they can. To have them with me on the Truck with GMS Racing in my debut, it shows there is a strong commitment between the two of us. It’s a cool feeling to have people behind you that want to contribute to everything that you are doing. The American Flag paint scheme is a fan favorite and I am excited to showcase it to a national audience.” The UNOH 200 presented by Ohio Logistics will take place on Thursday, September 16 at 9 p.m., live on Fox Sports 1, MRN, and Sirius XM NASCAR Radio Channel 90. "Doug has been successful with the Whelen Modified Tour and the short tracks and we are excited to support him on this bigger stage,” John Lawless, President of Mayhew Tools, said. “We have been with Doug for a while and not only do we think he has a lot of talent, but he is a wonderful spokesman for Mayhew Tools. We think he will go out there and do well and we wanted to be involved in his Truck debut.” GMS Racing President Mike Beam remarked, "I am looking forward to watching Doug Coby make his truck debut with our team at Bristol in September. Earlier this year, I had the chance to work with Doug through the SRX Series, and his ability to drive became apparent right away. This opportunity is a big one for him, and we are proud to represent his longtime sponsor, Mayhew Tools, onboard our No. 24 Silverado." STAFFORD, Conn. -- Doug Coby wheeled the No. 10 Mayhew Tools machine to a solid fourth-place finish in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour GAF Roofing 150 on Friday, August 6 at Stafford Motor Speedway. Coby, who qualified in fifth, worked his way into the second spot in the first half of the race, where he would run until the caution went in the air close to lap 100. Coby drove the car down pit road, where the Mayhew Tools team went to work, giving Doug a strong stop, as the six-time champion would restart and run at the lead of the race for some of the laps late. However -- Coby couldn’t quite hold off his challengers -- sliding back in the final laps and settling for a fourth-place effort, behind Ryan Preece, Justin Bonsignore and Jon McKennedy. The top-five finish was the 27th career top-five at his home track and 38th top-10 for the Milford, Connecticut, native. “We had a better car than anyone I think on the long run tonight,” Coby said. “But we were just a little bit off when we got the tires, and tires and adjustments seem to bring our competition to life. We were good -- just not exceptionally good. We talked about it after the race and we think there are a few things we could have done. Overall a good night. Thanks to Mayhew Tools and our entire team for their hard work.” Doug Coby will return to the track on Saturday, August 21 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Maine for the next NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race. MILFORD, Conn. -- Doug Coby is set to return to Stafford Motor Speedway this Friday, August 6, as the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour invades the half-mile for the eighth race of the season. Coby, a former multiple-time track champion, who is 18th on the all-time track wins list, has 12 of those wins in Whelen Modified Tour competition, and would love to add a lucky 13 in his return to his home track. Back in April, Coby finished 12th in the NAPA Spring Sizzler, but the finish didn’t showcase the speed that the No. 10 Mayhew Tools machine had that night. Coby was running inside the top-five late when contact between the leaders collected the six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion, forcing him to a finish outside the top-10. However, in June, Coby scored arguably the biggest win of his career at Stafford in the inaugural Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) event, besting names like Tony Stewart, Bill Elliott and Helio Castroneves. He’s excited to get back to the home track feel and chase the victory in the 30th annual GAF Roofing 150 this Friday night. Coby will enter the race ninth in the series championship standings, 73 points back from the lead, after missing Oswego Speedway to compete with SRX at Stafford, and also having a motor failure at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It appears Coby will need some help to chase a seventh title this season, but he isn’t giving up the quest quite yet. “Generally speaking I feel like when we were at the Spring Sizzler in April we had a car that could have won the race,” Coby said. “We’re going back there with the same car and the same setup, with the motor back from New Hampshire that is fresh and ready to go.” NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice will roll from 3:45-4:45 p.m., with Mayhew Tools qualifying set for 6:20 p.m. The green flag for the 30th annual GAF Roofing 150 is set to drop around 9:15 p.m., and will air live on TrackPass via NBC Sports Gold. Drivers will also take part in an autograph session in the grandstand area at 7 p.m. Tickets will also be available at the track for anyone who would like to head to the track to see the race in person.
