MILFORD, Conn. – Fresh off two straight NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour wins with Tommy Baldwin Racing, Doug Coby will strap back in behind the wheel of his own No. 10 Mayhew Tools Modified this Friday night. Set to compete in the $15,000 to win Racing Guys 100 at Claremont Motorsports Park, Coby heads to New Hampshire looking to collect the big check in the second race of the season for Doug Coby Racing.
Although the Milford, Connecticut, native has only raced at Claremont once – over 12 years ago – he is prepared to battle for the prize in a competitive field of talent. Names like Matt Hirschman, Woody Pitkat, and some of New Hampshire’s top local Modified stars will be competing in the 100-lap race.
“Like a lot of the other New Hampshire short tracks, Claremont is a technical place,” Coby said. “It’s a place where you can be easily baited into overdriving and charging the corners and killing the speed in the car. You have to make sure you get your angles right for the corners and don’t abuse the tires. Just like in any open modified race, you have to be aware of how the race is unfolding with strategy. We’re going to have to decide if we can go the whole race on the same set of tires, or if we need to come in and get the tire. I’ve seen races where people stay out and win without pitting, and others where people pit and charge through the field.”
Coby is excited to get back with his Doug Coby Racing team for open modified competition after competing on the Whelen Modified Tour and is hoping to carry some momentum from his victories into Claremont.
“It’s been an interesting start to the season, being two more races in than I had originally planned,” Coby said. “I think as a team we were disappointed with how the Spring Sizzler at Stafford unfolded in April, and then I went and won two races with Tommy Baldwin and his team. Excited to get back to work with the Mayhew Tools guys this Friday night.”
Friday’s race day schedule at Claremont includes practice beginning at 4 p.m., followed by the green flag for qualifying heats at 7 p.m. On top of the Modifieds, Claremont’s Late Model Sportsman, Mini Stocks, Six Shooters and Pure Stocks will also be in action. All tickets will be available at the track, and the race will also air live on RacingAmerica.TV for fans who can’t make it to the track.
