 SEEKONK, Mass. – Doug Coby rebounded after being collected in a mid-race wreck to finish fifth during Open Wheel Wednesday at Seekonk Speedway on Wednesday night. Coby won his qualifying heat race to start off the night in the Mayhew Tools No. 10 and rolled off ninth for the 100-lap, $10,000 to win race.
Coby ran around the bottom of the top-five for much of the first half of the race until the wreck off turn two on lap 49 left him no where to go. During the caution period, the team worked to repair the car and Coby returned to the track, restarting from 19th. He was able to pass 14 cars up into fifth before the finish. “It was a way different race compared to the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race here a few weeks ago,” Coby said. “I thought it was a really competitive race. We raced hard out there, risking using up your stuff for track position, but you had to do it. To come back from a wreck and grab a top-five, we’re happy. This Wednesday night, June 28, Coby has the chance to make it four. He will unload the Mayhew Tools No. 10 at the Action Track of the East chasing the big check with the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series. Coby has laps on the new Seekonk pavement with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, where he drove the Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 7NY to a podium finish. He will look to use that to his advantage as he returns to the track with the John McKenna prepared No. 10. “It will definitely be a different race compared to the Whelen Modified Tour race with the strategy and only green flag laps counting,” Coby said. “With the option to pit, it changes the game. RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – It was a solid night at Riverhead Raceway for Doug Coby and the Tommy Baldwin Racing team on Saturday night, June 24. Coby finished in the third spot after 200 laps in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour main event, a night where the track was honoring Mike Ewanitsko. He qualified the car in fourth and shuffled back a bit during the middle of the race. Over the final laps, he passed Kyle Bonsignore for third and ended the night on the podium. It was the 12th career top-five at Riverhead for the six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion. “The Mayhew Tools No. 7NY was good tonight,” Coby said. “I just couldn't get the grip on the bottom to get by for a run at second. I was a little bit better than Justin (Bonsignore) at the end. Happy for Ron (Silk) and his team, he’s been trying to win for a long time at Riverhead and I know the feeling. MILFORD, Conn. – Last time out at Riverhead Raceway on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, the day didn’t go the way Doug Coby would have imagined. Coby started the race two laps down and never recovered after an issue post-qualifying forced the team to change parts on the car. This Saturday night, Doug and the Tommy Baldwin Racing, Mayhew Tools No. 7NY team head back to New York looking to rebound and capitalize on the opportunity. Coby and Baldwin teamed together for the first time in May of 2022 and won their first race at Riverhead. After not winning in his first 19 Riverhead starts, Coby scored his first win at the New York track in 2021. He would follow it up with a second straight a few months later, and add his third win last season. In his last 13 Riverhead races, the six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion has finished top-10 in all but three of them. “We thought we had a car that could have competed with Justin (Bonsignore, winner) and Ron (Silk, second) when we were there last month,” Coby said. “Riverhead sprays down the track a bit differently it seems like every time we go there, and the track has been changing each time. We will have to adapt to that on Saturday. We definitely have an idea of what we need to do to make the car better and I think we will be ready to go for 200 laps.” As Riverhead honors Mike Ewanitsko Saturday night in the 200-lap event, the series will practice from 3:15-4:15 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools qualifying at 6 p.m. The race will begin at 8 p.m., live on FloRacing.TV. SEEKONK, Mass. – After a solid day at the track, Doug Coby and the Mayhew Tools, Tommy Baldwin Racing team finished second on Saturday night at Seekonk Speedway. Coby qualified the car in fourth spot and fell back a bit in the early laps, but worked the outside lane back to the runner-up spot quickly and ran there for the remainder of the laps in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour’s return to the Action Track of the East. Coby and Ron Silk raced hard for second late in the race, then three-time champion Justin Bonsignore joined the battle on the final restart. Coby was able to hold off both of them to come away with a second-place finish. He tried to chase down eventual winner Matt Hirschman for most of the race. “He (Hirschman) was slowing down in the traffic some, but he could pick it up whenever he wanted to do that,” Coby said. “We were in no danger of going a lap down and on a day like today where most of the field did go down a lap (all but five cars at the finish), that’s a good day. The Mayhew Tools team worked hard and we came away with a good finish.” Doug Coby and the Tommy Baldwin Racing team will be on track next at Riverhead Raceway with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour on June 24. Race Advance by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – When race six of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season takes the green flag this Saturday night at Seekonk Speedway, Doug Coby will feel at home. The Milford, Connecticut, native is a multiple-time Seekonk winner – both in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (2019, most recent winner and 2017) and in the track's prestigious Open Wheel Wednesday $10,000 to win Modified race, multiple times. Not only has he won at Seekonk in Modifieds, he’s also a winner of the Boston Louie Seymour Memorial for the NEMA Midgets. Seekonk, a third-mile oval, is a place where Coby feels he has the driving style to accomplish the goal heading into Saturday night: become the first two-time Tour winner in 2023. Through five Tour events, Coby is one of five different winners, rolling to Victory Lane at Monadnock Speedway in May. He’s joined by Ron Silk, Matt Hirschman, Justin Bonsignore and Austin Beers on that list. Seekonk does have new pavement down for 2023 down in the corners, something Coby is looking forward to trying in practice to see what it changes, if anything. “I don’t think it’s going to be the same old Seekonk from a driver's perspective,” Coby said. “I think it’s going to change the part of the track where a lot of people struggle, getting off the corner with their right foot and being there at the end. I think the pavement will give some people an ability to run outside more, hang around, in general have more grip… all of the things you prepare yourself for will be a bit different.
