Story by Souza Media/Kyle Souza STAFFORD, Conn. -- Doug Coby wrapped the 49th annual NAPA Spring Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway with a 12th place finish in the rain-shortened event on Friday, April 30. Coby qualified the Mayhew Tools No. 10 in the fourth position and ran inside the top-five for the first portion of the race, taking the lead from Matt Swanson just after lap 50. A caution shortly after saw Coby head to pit road for a fresh tire, and from there, the team prepared for the final pit stop of the night -- where the plan was to take two fresh Hoosier Tires. Coby pulled down pit road, took the two tires and went back out, but it didn’t end the way he was hoping. With 32 laps to go, contact sent Coby spinning in turn one, and that was the final caution of the race. Persistent rain hit the Connecticut area and NASCAR officials had no choice but to call the race complete. Coby’s No. 10 Mayhew Tools machine showed plenty of speed in his search for a fifth Spring Sizzler win at Stafford, leading laps, and Coby feels like without the contact, and rain, he would have had a good chance to finish on the podium. “We stuck to our strategy,” Coby said. “But we had a caution, came back in, and as far as I’m concerned, I had a car that could have won the race. I felt it. I know what a car needs here, and I felt it. We rolled the dice good enough in the beginning, we knew what we needed to change, and at the end, I was happy with how the car was.” Doug Coby Racing returns to the track on Saturday, May 15, at Riverhead Raceway in New York. Story By Souza Media/Kyle Souza MILFORD, Conn. -- Doug Coby is looking to add a fifth NAPA Spring Sizzler victory to his resume this Friday night at Stafford Motor Speedway. In race two of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, Coby will return to his home track on April 30 to drive the Mayhew Tools No. 10, coming off a sixth-place finish in the Whelen Modified Tour opener at Martinsville Speedway. The NAPA Spring Sizzler was originally slated to take place on April 25, but weather forced NASCAR & Stafford officials to postpone the race to Friday, April 30. The Milford, Connecticut, six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion, has 12 victories in 58 career starts at Stafford in tour competition and is also a two-time track champion and multiple-time winner. “We would have liked to have a stronger run at Martinsville, but if you look at our statistics at Stafford, it’s been a good track for us,” Coby said. “There is a tire rule and some pit stop rules in play for the Sizzler, but we will have a fast car. It’s the Spring Sizzler. It’s one of the biggest races that you mark on your calendar to help kick-off the season. With it being our first New England race of the year, the history of the Sizzler, and the list of drivers who have won that race… I’m excited to go back there.” Coby will also look to continue a streak of six consecutive top-three finishes at Stafford, dating back to 2018 -- a span that includes two victories for the Mayhew Tools team. The 49th annual NAPA Spring Sizzler Sunday includes the Whelen Modified Tour along with two of Stafford’s local open-wheel divisions -- the SK Modifieds and SK Light Modifieds -- along with the Open Vintage Mods. General admission tickets are currently sold out due to Connecticut capacity restrictions due to COVID-19. The Whelen Modified Tour will practice from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at approximately 6:30 p.m. The 49th annual NAPA Spring Sizzler is slated for the green flag at 8:30 p.m. The race will air live on NBC Sports Gold via TrackPass, where fans can watch the entire remaining Whelen Modified Tour slate for just $2.99 per month.
