Mechanical Failure Sidelines Doug Coby Early at Martinsville Speedway
By Souza Media MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Doug Coby was running comfortably inside the top-10 when a mechanical failure suddenly forced him to pull into the garage early on Thursday at Martinsville Speedway. Competing in the season-finale for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Coby wheeled the Mayhew Tools No. 10 and ran around the top-10 for the beginning stages of the race. During a mid-race caution, Coby pitted, along with others, and restarted in the middle of the pack. He worked his way up into the top-five, and was running fifth when the car stumbled with a mechanical problem and Coby had no choice but to pull behind the wall at lap 147, ending his night early. The culprit was a broken left-rear rotor. “We had a good run going towards the end before our problem,” Coby said. “I can’t thank the Mayhew Tools team enough for making the trip to Martinsville possible. We would have loved to come away with the Grandfather Clock but it wasn’t meant to be. We had speed in the car and just didn’t come away with the finish we were hoping for.” Post-race, Coby celebrated with Tommy Baldwin Racing, who received their championship honors for winning the Whelen Modified Tour owner’s title in 2022. Coby wheeled the No. 7NY to three wins on the season at Lee USA Speedway, Riverhead Raceway and Langley Speedway. Doug Coby will return to the track at Caraway Speedway for the North-South Shootout with Tommy Baldwin Racing on Saturday, November 5. MILFORD, Conn. – As a part-time campaign comes to a close on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour in 2022, Doug Coby and the Mayhew Tools No. 10 team are heading south this Thursday to Martinsville Speedway. Set to compete in the Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 200, Coby will look to add the historic track to his wins list and collect the special Grandfather Clock trophy. Although Coby has multiple wins on the Whelen Modified Tour circuit this season, all of them came driving for Tommy Baldwin Racing. In fact, Coby was one of three drivers to help Baldwin Racing seal the owner’s championship on the Tour, which they will celebrate Thursday night. With all eyes set on glory in his own ride, Coby would love to end the season for his personal race team in Victory Lane and give the Mayhew Tools team some well-deserved winning medicine. In a few starts with the team this season at Thompson Speedway, Coby has top-10 finishes in both and has led 77 laps. “We’ve been fast with our team and that’s a good start. It gives us confidence to know that we can compete and lead laps and keep building our notebook with setups that keep tires under us for the long runs,” Coby said. “It’s really hard when you’re racing against teams that have 16 races under their belts and have tried everything and we’re still playing catch-up. Winning at Martinsville and getting the Grandfather Clock, it’s on the bucket list. It would be a huge win for my team and I, and it’s an accomplishment few people have an opportunity to do. There is a ton of history with how far back the Modifieds go at Martinsville and it’s important for our series to race there. A combination of Modified history and being on the big stage with the NASCAR Cup Series… It's great for us.” Martinsville Speedway’s race day schedule begins with practice from 3-4 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at 5 p.m. The green flag for the Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 200 will drop at 8 p.m., and will air live on FloRacing.TV. THOMPSON, Conn. – Early in Sunday’s Sunoco World Series 150 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, Doug Coby had the car to beat in the Mayhew Tools No. 10. Leading the entire first half of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour main event, Coby looked to be in control before the race continued under green all the way until the finish. The car faded a bit in the second half of the race, and Coby finished in the eighth position. However, he was still able to celebrate after the race. Coby joined the Tommy Baldwin Racing celebration, as the team unofficially clinched the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour owner’s championship on Sunday. Coby wheeled the No. 7NY for the team in multiple events during the 2022 season, capturing three feature wins with the group along the way. This Thompson event was behind the wheel of his own Doug Coby Racing entry. “Tommy’s had the best car all year no matter who has been driving it,” Coby said. “I’m happy for Tommy and his team, they are a good group of guys. They are deserving of it and they have been working really hard on their program. It’s neat. As far as the race, we wouldn’t have changed a thing on the car if there was a caution and we pitted. We could have won the race if we had the chance to go in and get tires. I do think we had the best car for a 50 lap run today but just not the best for a 150-lap run.” Doug Coby will return to the track at Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Virginia for the final race of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season on Thursday, October 27. Coby Set For Thompson Return in Mayhew Tools Ride For Whelen Modified Tour World Series 15010/6/2022 By Souza Media
THOMPSON, Conn. – Doug Coby will return to the seat of the No. 10 Mayhew Tools Modified this weekend at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. Set to compete in the Sunoco World Series 150, Coby will compete in the Doug Coby Racing entry looking to build on the speed the team had at Thompson in August. After practicing at the front and qualifying inside the top-five, Coby raced through the pack in the final laps to score a third-place finish. This week, he’s hoping to build on that and get back to Victory Lane. The six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion has won multiple Tour races this year, all with Tommy Baldwin Racing. But he wants to take his own car back to the front and victory lane. “I was really happy with how fast we were with not having a notebook and kind of guessing at the setup to go there with when we were there in August,” Coby said. “There had been some changes with the tires and what others were doing with their cars. To go back to Thompson for the World Series, we have a ton of confidence that we will have a car that can win the race if we do our job during the day.” Thompson’s World Series weekend schedule includes practice and Mayhew Tools qualifying on Saturday, October 8, and the 150-lap Sunoco World Series race on Sunday, October 9. Tickets will be available at the track and the race will also air live on FloRacing.TV for those who can’t make it to Connecticut.
