LANCASTER, N.Y. -- Doug Coby’s chances of winning at New York International (Lancaster) Speedway ended before they even got started on Saturday, July 31. Coby -- after qualifying the No. 10 Mayhew Tools Modified in sixth position -- suffered a broken shifter on the pace laps of the Nu-Way Auto Parts 150, the inaugural race for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at the New York oval. When Coby pulled down pit road, the race went green, and Coby pulled back on the track one lap later. NASCAR deemed that Coby had lost two laps. He was able to get one lucky dog early in the race, but wasn’t able to fully regain positioning and finished the race in ninth, the only car one lap down. “The shifter handle came off on the pace laps and it kinda just snowballed from there,” Coby said. “I didn’t think I was going to be able to shift, but there was just enough of the nub there left for me to make it work. We disagreed with NASCAR’s positioning for us and still do. That kept us off the lead lap. We had a slight mistake on the pit stop and we just didn’t have a good night -- but I had a car that was definitely finishing first, second or third with the way it was driving if we didn’t have the issues. Thank you to Mayhew Tools, all of our sponsors, and my entire crew for working their tail off today.” The top-10 finish at Lancaster was the 154th of Coby’s career and his fifth of the season in six tour starts. Doug Coby will return to competition on Friday, August 6, in the ninth Whelen Modified Tour event of the season at Stafford Motor Speedway. MILFORD, Conn. -- Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby will look to get back on track with the No. 10 Mayhew Tools Modified this Saturday, July 31, when the series makes their debut visit to New York International (Lancaster) Speedway in upstate New York. Coby, a Milford, Connecticut, native, enters the race ninth in the championship standings with two wins in his first six tour starts of the year. Coby missed the Oswego Speedway event on June 12 to compete and win with the SRX Series at Stafford Motor Speedway, and has been trying to climb back in the driver standings. However, the last time out at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, motor issues sidelined Coby from the race early. Entering a new track, which Coby knows will be a challenge for the entire team, Coby is chasing trophies -- looking to win as many races as possible in the final half of the season. The Lancaster visit will be the first of two races in six days for the Whelen Modified Tour -- with a return to Stafford Motor Speedway on the horizon for August 6. “It’s fun to go to a couple of new tracks every year, and nice to have the challenge,” Coby said. “We’re going somewhere where a bunch of guys have experience and we don’t have any particular setup experience ourselves at the track. The first time we went to Oswego Speedway a few years ago, we went out there and won the race, and I had never seen the place, so we will see. From here out to the rest of the season, we’re just going to keep putting ourselves in position to win.” A full race day schedule at Lancaster on Saturday includes the local Sportsman, Street Stocks and 4-Cylinders. The Whelen Modified Tour portion of the day includes practice from 2-3:15 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools qualifying at 5 p.m. The green flag for the Nu-Way Auto Parts 150 is scheduled to drop at 8 p.m., live on TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold. LOUDON, N.H. -- Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby finished 27th on Saturday, July 17 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The driver of the No. 10 Mayhew Tools machine was forced to pull into the garage early with a motor issue -- only completing 44 of the laps in the Whelen 100 in the most prestigious race of the year. Coby qualified the car in ninth position, and ran inside the top-10 for the entire time that he was on the track. However, after passing Ronnie Williams and closing into the bottom of the top-five, Coby noticed the car didn’t seem up to full power. A few laps later, he decided to pull the car down pit road to the attention of his team and avoid any further damage to the engine. “The motor was running fine for the most part when we were out there,” Coby said. “I just noticed after I passed a few cars that they were able to stay with me, but they weren’t handling well. It just didn’t feel like it was working down the straightaway. I put my foot down onto the gas off turn four and I could tell something was wrong. Nothing broke and snapped -- it was still running -- just not sure what happened. But we drove up to fifth and had a better handling car than most of the guys out there at the time. We will just move on to the next one.” Doug Coby will return to the track at New York International (Lancaster) Speedway on Saturday, July 31, in the eighth race of the season for the Whelen Modified Tour. MILFORD, Conn. -- The last time the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour was on the track, Doug Coby drove the No. 10 Mayhew Tools machine into Victory Lane at Riverhead Raceway on Sunday, June 20. Now -- nearly a month later -- the Whelen Modified Tour will return to the track for the seventh race of the season -- marking the halfway point in the 14-race schedule -- and Coby and his closest challengers are headed to New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 17. The 1.058-mile oval will play host to the Whelen 100 -- one of the most anticipated events on the series schedule each year. New Hampshire, nicknamed the ‘Magic Mile’, produces some of the most exciting action in Modified racing -- with drafting, tight packs and thrilling finishes. Coby enters the race fourth in the championship standings, 41 points from leader Patrick Emerling, after missing the June 12 event at Oswego Speedway in order to win the inaugural SRX race at Stafford Motor Speedway. The Milford, Connecticut, six-time champion is hoping New Hampshire will produce another win -- but more importantly -- a continued climb up in the standings in chase of a historic seventh title. “We’re just going to go try and win Loudon,” Coby said. ”From here out, for the rest of the season, we’re in max points mode… we want to lead laps and get as close to 48 points (maximum) in each race as we can. Whatever happens with the other drivers will happen. Loudon is tough. Anything can happen right down until the last corner. You could be in the top-five going into the last corner and end up outside the top-20. We’re really happy with our shock and spring package right now and we’re looking forward to having a better run at Loudon compared to the last time we went there.” In 34 previous starts at New Hampshire, Coby has four victories -- coming in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016. Three of those four victories came in the heat of a championship season. The schedule for Saturday’s Whelen 100 will be a tight one, with a limited amount of time in between practice, qualifying and the race. Practice is set to roll from 10-11 a.m., with Mayhew Tools pole qualifying set for 11:30 a.m. The green flag for the Whelen 100 will fly at 12:45 p.m., live on NBC Sports Gold through TrackPass. The race will also air via tape delay on NBCSN on a later date. For more information on Doug Coby Racing, visit the team on Facebook.
