STAFFORD, Conn. -- Doug Coby came up one spot short of ending the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season in Victory Lane on Saturday, September 25 at Stafford Motor Speedway. Coby drove the No. 10 Mayhew Tools entry to a second-place finish in the NAPA Fall Final 150 to close the 14-race schedule on the podium. Coby qualified fifth in Mayhew Tools pole qualifying and ran inside the top-five for the whole race -- one that went green until the final 25 laps. During the only pit stop of the night, the Mayhew Tools team went to work -- putting fresh rear tires on the car in quick fashion -- and giving Coby a shot at the win with their strong pit stop. Coby edged Justin Bonsignore to the line for a green-white-checkered restart, but couldn’t quite seal the deal. Bonsignore earned his first Stafford win, while Coby chased him to the line for second. Coby’s finish was enough to score him a fifth-place finish in the driver championship standings, even after missing a race in June. The Doug Coby Racing team also sealed third in the owner’s standings to close the year. “Justin just had drive-off the corner and I was really tight at the end,” Coby said. “I tried to pinch him down a bit, but I just couldn’t get him. We were just a little bit off. During the long run, we were not great, then good, then not bad. I think if it stayed green, I might have been able to run Justin down. I drove the crap out of the car trying, but we just didn’t have enough. Solid day for our Mayhew Tools team.” For more information on Doug Coby Racing, visit DougCobyRacing.com and follow the team on Facebook. MILFORD, Conn. -- With just one race remaining in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, Doug Coby is heading back to his home track this Saturday, September 25. Coby will drive the No. 10 Mayhew Tools Modified in the NAPA Fall Final 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway, the season-finale for the tour. Although he isn’t in the quest for the championship this year, Saturday’s race will still mark an important moment for the Milford, Connecticut, native when it comes to the points battle. In the driver’s standings, Coby is sixth -- 78 points from the lead -- but he is only 10 points behind third-place Ron Silk. In fact, the drivers from third to seventh in the standings are separated by just 13 points total. However, Coby is third in the owner’s point standings -- comfortably 20 points up on Silk’s No. 85 team. When it comes to the season-ending point fund, the owners receive the payout -- and Coby is looking to seal third-place on that front. The six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion is a multiple-time Stafford weekly series champion and a 12-time tour winner at the half-mile. In June, he won the Superstar Racing Experience (SRX Series) race at his home track. The goal is to win the Fall Final. “Just trying to end the season there with a win,” Coby said. “Riverhead took us out of the second-place battle in the owner's points. We just want to maintain the owner’s points in third. We’re going to try some more new stuff in our setup package and continue to try and build our Stafford program even further. We want to build our notebook back to the point where we have an advantage there like we had before. Ending the season with a win would be a big accomplishment.” A full race day at Stafford includes practice from 1:20-2:20 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at 4 p.m. The green flag for the NAPA Fall Final 150 will drop at 6 p.m., live on NBC Sports Gold’s TrackPass, and tape-delayed on NBCSN. RIVERHEAD, N.Y. -- Doug Coby’s day at Riverhead Raceway went from running second and in contention for the season sweep, to in the wall and done for the night on Saturday, September 18. Coby was running second in the Miller Lite 200, after qualifying on the outside pole, when he moved to the outside of polesitter Tom Rogers Jr. for the race lead coming off turn two on lap 53. However -- Rogers moved up to the track down the backstretch -- and Coby’s right-front wheel made contact with the outside wall, breaking some of the suspension and forcing the Milford, Connecticut, native behind the wall and out of the race early. The team thrashed in the garage working on the car in an attempt to get back on the track, but Coby was forced to a 24th place finish in the 13th NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race of the season. “I got a wheel up on the outside of him the lap before and he didn’t really move over,” Coby said. “So, I got up on the outside of him again a lap later, and he didn’t give me one inch or ounce of space. I can’t thank my Mayhew Tools team enough for all of the hard work on Saturday. It was a long day, but we had a good car. We will be back at Stafford.” Next up for Doug Coby and the Doug Coby Racing team is the final NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race of the season at Stafford Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 25, in the running of the NAPA Fall Final. After that, Doug Coby will run select Open Modified events in New England to close the 2021 season. For more information on Doug Coby Racing, visit DougCobyRacing.com and follow the team on Facebook. BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Doug Coby drove the No. 24 Mayhew Tools Truck to a solid 12th-place finish in his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut at Bristol Motor Speedway on Thursday, September 16. Driving for GMS Racing, Coby started 30th -- with no practice or qualifying due to NASCAR’s new race policies -- and no previous laps in a truck. However, during the race, Coby methodically worked his way up through the field into the top-20, and rode there for the second half. In the final laps, the six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion charged through some traffic and finished the UNOH 200 in 12th spot. Overall, it was a strong effort for the Milford, Connecticut, native in his series debut -- one where he learned a lot and enjoyed competing in one of NASCAR’s top three divisions with sponsorship from Mayhew Tools. “All of the people at GMS Racing, from top to bottom, were awesome to work with,” Coby said. “It’s great exposure for Mayhew Tools and myself, as we are a team. The biggest thing was completing all 200 laps and getting the experience, doing the pit stops, and not getting sucked into a wreck. I think we had a truck that could have competed in the top-five or the top-10, if we were there. With the flow of the race, with all of the cautions, and a few mistakes on restarts… any time we lost spots, we were able to make them back up.” Now, Coby will head back to New England and return to the track on Saturday, September 18, in the 13th race of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season at Riverhead Raceway in New York. Coby and the Doug Coby Racing team are just 20 points out of the lead in the owners championship standings with two races remaining in the season. Meanwhile, Coby is also looking to accomplish a goal: complete the season sweep at Riverhead. Not known as one of his best tracks entering this year, Coby is two-for-two at the bullring heading into this Saturday night and would love to grab a third. “We’ve definitely been on our game this year with what we need at Riverhead with their pavement changes and putting down the grip,” Coby said. “These other guys are going to keep tweaking and working on their setups to get better, and we’re doing the same. I wouldn’t say we are a shoe-in to go out there and have the best car… but we have just had a great car there this year. We will be ready.” Coby, and the rest of the Whelen Modified Tour family, will be honoring the legacy of track owner and former Whelen Modified Tour champion car owner Ed Partridge, who passed away last week. “Going there with everything going on, it’s going to be a tough night for a lot of people,” Coby said. The Miller Lite 200 is scheduled for the green flag at 8 p.m. on Saturday night, with live coverage on NBC Sports Gold. MILFORD, Conn. -- At 42-years-old, Doug Coby has six NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championships, 31 tour wins and multiple track championships at Stafford Motor Speedway to his credit. Those are just a few of his accomplishments on his impressive resume -- but this Thursday, September 16, Coby knocks another major race off his bucket list. Coby will make his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut with GMS Racing at Bristol Motor Speedway driving the No. 24 Mayhew Tools entry in the UNOH 200. With no practice laps or qualifying due to NASCAR’s scheduling adjustments due to the COVID pandemic, Coby will have to adapt on the fly, as the Milford, Connecticut, native will start towards the back of the field. However, Coby is hoping to rely on all of his racing experience -- which includes a win in the Superstar Racing Experience (SRX Series) at Stafford earlier this year. On that night, Coby debuted, along with the rest of the series, in new cars, and beat the best of the sport, with names like Tony Stewart, Bill Elliott and Helio Castroneves. That victory helped him earn the ride for his Truck debut. And at Bristol, a place Coby has four top-five finishes in his eight Modified starts, he’s hoping to lean on the fast laps in the open-wheel Modified. “I think Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, going over the race preparation stuff is when it’s going to hit me that we are going to Bristol and it’s go time,” Coby said. “I don’t have any reason to get stressed out about it, because I don’t know what to expect. If I adapt quickly and get comfortable quickly, we will just go out there and manage the race like we would manage a Modified race. We have to minimize the mistakes. When you’re a short-track guy and get an opportunity, you are representing more than just yourself. Suddenly your rivals become cheerleaders. You want someone from our level to perform well because it validates the tour and everywhere that we grew up racing. Any time one of us gets to do something like this, we are definitely representing the short-track community. To be able to go back to Bristol, it’s a very unique facility. It’s very challenging and very fast. I’m really excited for all of my sponsors and friends, family and everyone involved. Everyone is super excited.” Coby’s Modified sponsor -- Mayhew Tools -- will join the Truck for a special red, white and blue, patriotic paint scheme that mirrors what Coby runs in events on the Whelen Modified Tour. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series UNOH 200 at Bristol is set to take the green flag at 9 p.m., live on Fox Sports 1. RICHMOND, Va. -- In his return to Virginia two decades after graduating from the University of Richmond, Doug Coby grabbed a top-five finish at Richmond Raceway on Friday, September 10. Coby drove the No. 10 Mayhew Tools entry to a fifth-place finish in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Virginia is For Racing Lovers 150 after running inside the top-10 inside the final half of the race. It wasn’t the win that Coby was hoping for, but overall, it was a strong night for the Milford, Connecticut native in the owner’s championship standings. Even though Coby missed the Whelen Modified Tour event at Oswego Speedway in June, Chase Dowling drove the car to a top-10 finish that night, which gained the Doug Coby Racing team crucial owner points. Now, with both Justin Bonsignore and Patrick Emerling having issues during the Richmond event, Coby’s team is just over 20 points out of the lead with two races remaining. “Leaving Richmond with a fifth-place finish was kind of a blessing because I didn’t feel like we would have a car that could run there early in the race,” Coby said. “My team made some great adjustments on the pit stops and we restarted 14th towards the end and drove up to fifth. I think we could have finished anywhere from second to 10th in that race. I didn’t really think about points while the race was going on, but my goal has been to get second in the owner points. With Justin and Patrick having problems, it makes the owner’s championship mathematically possible, but 20 points is still a strong number. We will just do what we can in the last two races.” Doug Coby will return to the track twice in the next week, with his first stop coming at Bristol Motor Speedway on Thursday, September 16. Coby will make his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut for GMS Racing at the Tennessee oval. Following that, Coby will look to sweep the final NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Riverhead Raceway on Saturday, September 18. Coby won the first two tour races of the year at the New York bullring in May and June. MILFORD, Conn. -- Even though he has no previous laps at Richmond Raceway, in many ways, Doug Coby is returning to his second home this Friday, September 10. Coby, who graduated from the University of Richmond in 2001, is set for action in the Virginia is For Racing Lovers 150 at the three-quarter mile oval under the lights. The six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion knows that the race is a crown jewel event on the 2021 schedule, and is hoping he can park the No. 10 Mayhew Tools machine in Victory Lane. On a night where many fans in the stands might be cheering Coby on, the veteran will look to continue his climb up the championship standings with only three races to go in the season. After missing one event, Coby has climbed back to fourth, just 74 points from the lead. More importantly, Coby is just 17 points out of third, and the Doug Coby Racing machine is just 38 points back of the lead in the owner's championship battle. All eyes will be on winning at Richmond for Coby, who is excited to head back to some of his roots. “The Whelen Modified Tour was regularly going to Richmond back when I was in school there and when I started running full-time in 2003, Richmond was off the schedule,” Coby said. “I never got the chance to turn laps there and it was definitely disappointing. To get back there, it’s exciting. I’m going to spend some time with some friends after the race. I’m going back to somewhere that was a second home for a long time for me. The track is highly regarded by everyone in the racing industry. I’m hoping that I will be able to lean on some Iowa Speedway testing experience I had a few years ago in order to figure out how to get around there. It’s a similar feeling on a much larger track, but completely different from a mile. We are hoping the Mayhew Tools machine is a contender for the win.” The race day schedule for the Virginia is For Racing Lovers 150 includes one practice session from 1:30-3 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at 5 p.m. The feature race is expected to green at 7 p.m., live on NBC Sports Gold through TrackPass. For those in the area, tickets are available in advance and will also be available at the track. For more information on the event, visit RichmondRaceway.com. OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Doug Coby’s day at Oswego Speedway with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour on September 4 included two fourth-place efforts. Coby qualified the No. 10 Mayhew Tools machine in the fourth spot, ran inside the top-10 for the distance of the Toyota Mod Classic 150, and crossed the line fourth at the finish driving the Doug Coby Racing entry. Coby’s car was strong -- but not quite strong enough to contend for the win -- in a race that only had few cautions, and most of the leaders, including Coby, went the entire distance on the same set of tires. Overall, it was a strong day for the Milford, Connecticut, native. “We had a skip in the motor in practice and we lost a lot of time changing everything we could to try and fix it,” Coby said. “We got rid of whatever it was for qualifying, and we were good there. It was a solid day. We didn’t quite have a car that could contend for the win, but we were right there with some of the other guys who were in the top-five. I would have liked to be a little bit better -- but you never know when you are going to get cautions and what sort of grip the track is going to give you at Oswego.” With Oswego in the rear-view mirror, Coby and the team will head to the next three consecutive weeks to close the Whelen Modified Tour season. Up next will be a trip to Richmond Raceway on Friday, September 10, for 150 laps. Coby’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut with GMS Racing at Bristol Motor Speedway will take place on Thursday, September 16. MILFORD, Conn. -- With a goal of winning in mind, Doug Coby is heading back to Oswego Speedway this weekend looking to carry the checkered flag. Coby, a former winner at the New York oval, didn’t compete in the first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event at the track earlier this year, and instead, won the inaugural SRX event at Stafford Motor Speedway on June 12. In June, Chase Dowling did wheel the Doug Coby Racing, Mayhew Tools No. 10 to an eighth-place finish at Oswego, but that didn’t show the speed the car had. A pit road penalty issued by NASCAR forced Dowling to restart at the rear of the race around halfway, ending his chances of winning. Coby won at Oswego in 2016 and hasn’t finished worse than sixth in four attempts at the tricky track. Known for high speeds and a boiler plate across the inside walls that sticks out towards the track, Oswego is one of the more difficult tracks on the schedule. One of Coby’s main goals in the final four races of the season is to win as many races as possible, but even though the Milford, Connecticut, driver is nearly out of contention for the drivers title, the owners championship is still in reach for Doug Coby Racing. The team is third, only 36 points from the owners lead, and Coby has a goal of trying to advance his position. “Everybody on the team was confident that if they didn't have the pit road penalty they would have been in contention for the win in June,” Coby said. “I’m excited, and confident that we will be fast. Hopefully we will be in contention to win. The usual characters are going to be fast and we will have to be with them in order to have a shot at winning. If one of the other drivers in this owners title battle has a bad race, it could get to the point where it gets interesting when we head to the final two races. I would really like to get at least second in owner points.” The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour rolls to Oswego this weekend, then hits Richmond Raceway on September 10, Riverhead Raceway on September 18 and Stafford Motor Speedway and September 25, over consecutive weeks to end the season. The Toyota Mod Classic 150 race day will include practice from 1:35-2:35 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools Dominator Pole qualifying at 4:15 p.m. The drop of the green flag in the 11th race of the Whelen Modified Tour season is set for 7:30 p.m., and will air live on NBC Sports Gold’s TrackPass platform.
