NEW SMYRNA, Fla. – Doug Coby led the most laps in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season-opener at New Smyrna Speedway, and finished the 200-lap event in fifth spot on Saturday night, February 11.
Coby started from the Mayhew Tools pole after qualifying was washed out, leading the field to green in the Tommy Baldwin Racing 7NY after the field was set by 2022 owner’s points. Coby jumped to the lead quickly at the beginning and led laps, then after a few cycles of pit stops, found himself in the lead just after halfway and led a string of circuits during a long green-flag run. A caution in the final 50 laps, and a ton of hard racing for the lead and top-five spots, cycled Coby in and out of the podium. He would settle for fifth – even after being collected in a crash in the final laps and rebounding from it. Overall, it was a good start to the season for the Mayhew Tools team. “I would have loved to have won the race but we had a fantastic car out there,” Coby said. “We were just a tiny bit short on stagger on the last run. We are experienced together already as a group and I know the team knows I can manage the race, and I love that they can trust me to do what I need to do.” The next event on the calendar for Doug Coby and the Tommy Baldwin Racing 7NY team will be at Richmond Raceway on Friday, March 31. Coby To Pilot Historic 7NY With Sponsorship From Mayhew Tools
Race Advance by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby will begin the season when the series hits the track at New Smyrna Speedway this Saturday night, February 11. Coby will strap behind the wheel of the historic 7NY for Tommy Baldwin Racing with sponsorship from Massachusetts-based company Mayhew Tools. Coby and Baldwin have teamed together for 2023 to chase Coby’s seventh title, and Baldwin’s second owner’s championship in a row. Coby is excited to get to the high-banks of New Smyrna – a track where he’s had success before. Although he didn’t start the only Tour race in the history of the track last year, Coby has wins to his credit in the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing Tour Modified division. Baldwin’s team also won the World Series Tour Modified championship last year at New Smyrna. “It’s important for us to start the season on a high note and I think we will have a car capable of winning the race,” Coby said. “We just have to make the right decisions with the tires we’re allowed to change on pit stops. This is one of those tracks where there are more than a handful of guys that run well – it’s not just one or two drivers. It’s one of the tracks that all of us love – being fast and a track that races well when the tire wear and different grooves come into play. It’s a neat track. So fast that sometimes when you practice you start wondering how you’re going to be able to pass someone, but when everything comes into play, it’s a good race.” NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour teams will have two practice sessions – one from 1-1:45 and another from 2:45-3:30 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at 6 p.m. For more information on Doug Coby Racing, visit DougCobyRacing.com and follow the team Facebook page for the latest updates from the track. Coby Will Compete For Seventh Championship With Veteran Championship Car Owner on NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour
Press Release by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – Doug Coby and Tommy Baldwin Racing jointly announced today that Coby will pilot the historic No. 7NY for a full-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour campaign in 2023. Set to compete in the 19-race schedule that begins in February at New Smyrna Speedway, the team will carry primary sponsorship from Mayhew Tools – a sponsor that has been with Coby since 2017 and is happy to make the move with him to TBR. The partnership between Baldwin and Coby will allow the six-time series champion to chase a seventh championship, while also allowing Baldwin to try to continue his incredible run of success with his team. In 2022, Baldwin won the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour owners championship with three different drivers – Coby as one of them. The Milford, Connecticut, veteran won three races with Baldwin in 2022, including two straight early in the season at Lee USA Speedway and Riverhead Raceway, and another at Langley Speedway. Baldwin is excited to get work with Coby again, this time on a full-time basis. “We worked together for the first time last year and it sparked success right from the first laps we had together on the track,” Tommy Baldwin Jr. said. “Doug is a proven champion who knows how to be there at the end of races and the end of the year when it comes time to crown a champion. His record speaks for itself. With the year we had in 2022, we are looking forward to building on all of our success and putting ourselves back at the front again in 2023. Having Doug pilot the 7NY with the assistance of Mayhew Tools is a great opportunity for us.” Coby sits inside the top-six on the all-time wins on the Tour with 34 victories to go along with his six titles. He has finished inside the top-10 in the points in 12 consecutive seasons – including in 2022 – where he competed in 12 of the series’ 16 events – driving nine races for Baldwin and three for his own team. Mayhew Tools has been a major supporter of Coby in the last five years – including sponsoring his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2021. Mayhew also sponsors the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour pole award at each event during the season. “Mayhew Tools and I have a great relationship, with the goal being to bring brand awareness to the Mayhew name through our partnership on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. I’ve been fortunate to have them with me at Mike Smeriglio Racing, my own team Doug Coby Racing, and now next season with Tommy Baldwin Racing,” said Coby. “Tommy’s family history in the Modifieds and his notoriety in NASCAR gives us a chance to get even more eyes on the Mayhew logo, and right now Tommy’s preparing the fastest cars in the pit area, so teaming up with Tommy full time on the Tour in 2023 is a huge opportunity for us. Chasing my seventh NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship behind the wheel of the 7NY is a pretty neat story and I can’t wait to build on the success we already found together last season.” The 2023 Whelen Modified Tour season will begin at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida on Saturday, February 11 and spread across eight states, ending in Virginia at Martinsville Speedway on Thursday, October 26, 2023. The series will visit multiple of New England’s staple race tracks including Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, Seekonk Speedway, Monadnock Speedway and more, while also helping to headline weekends with NASCAR National Series at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and Martinsville Speedway, among other events. A full version of the 2023 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour schedule can be found here. “Mayhew Tools has been a supporter of Doug Coby and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour pole award for many years, and we have had a tremendous amount of success in the past with Doug and his race teams,” said John Lawless, President of Mayhew Tools, “Last year was only a partial season for both Doug and Mayhew, but we are really looking forward to supporting the combination of Doug and Tommy Baldwin Racing for a full season on the Whelen Modified Tour. We think they’re going to be a team that will certainly contend for many wins and a championship this season, and we are excited to help them work together on a full time basis.” Details surrounding any additional events in 2023 outside of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour schedule for Doug Coby will be announced at a later date. MILFORD, Conn. – Doug Coby is heading back to Caraway Speedway for the first time in seven years this weekend, looking to bring a trophy back to New England. Coby will drive one of three Tommy Baldwin Racing entries in the North-South Shootout at Caraway – an event that brings the best of the North, and the South, together for one Tour-Type Modified 125-lap main event. The race is well-known as one of the top of the season in the Modified market, and Coby would love to win it for the first time. As a six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion and multiple-time Tour-Type Modified race winner, the North-South Shootout is still one on the bucket list for Coby. He knows he will have a good opportunity to win with Baldwin’s team. The No. 7NY captured three championships this season, with four different drivers, including the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour owner’s championship, the SMART Modified Tour title and the New Smyrna Speedway World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing crown. He knows the car will have the speed to get the job done and has already won multiple times in the seat this season so far. “I don’t have a ton of memory of what the track is like from when I went there the last time,” Coby said. “I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to manage my tires and racing at places like Myrtle Beach Speedway, Lee USA Speedway, Seekonk Speedway… I feel like I’ve gotten a lot better at it. Tommy has races there under his belt and it would be neat to be racing the other Tommy Baldwin Racing cars for the win. Guys like Matt Hirschman and all of the Southern Modified guys will be tough to beat. It certainly was an awesome season for Tommy and his team and the North-South Shootout has always been a big event. It means a lot to honor John Blewett, Charles Kepley and their families… I’ve never won it, but I’m definitely going after it.” The full schedule for race day at Caraway Speedway includes practice beginning at 9am on Saturday. Feature racing is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., and the Tour-Type Modified North-South Shootout 125 is slated as the final feature race of the day. The race will air live on PitRow.TV for those who are not in the area. Jimmy Blewett and Caleb Heady will also drive for Tommy Baldwin Racing. Mechanical Failure Sidelines Doug Coby Early at Martinsville Speedway
By Souza Media MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Doug Coby was running comfortably inside the top-10 when a mechanical failure suddenly forced him to pull into the garage early on Thursday at Martinsville Speedway. Competing in the season-finale for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Coby wheeled the Mayhew Tools No. 10 and ran around the top-10 for the beginning stages of the race. During a mid-race caution, Coby pitted, along with others, and restarted in the middle of the pack. He worked his way up into the top-five, and was running fifth when the car stumbled with a mechanical problem and Coby had no choice but to pull behind the wall at lap 147, ending his night early. The culprit was a broken left-rear rotor. “We had a good run going towards the end before our problem,” Coby said. “I can’t thank the Mayhew Tools team enough for making the trip to Martinsville possible. We would have loved to come away with the Grandfather Clock but it wasn’t meant to be. We had speed in the car and just didn’t come away with the finish we were hoping for.” Post-race, Coby celebrated with Tommy Baldwin Racing, who received their championship honors for winning the Whelen Modified Tour owner’s title in 2022. Coby wheeled the No. 7NY to three wins on the season at Lee USA Speedway, Riverhead Raceway and Langley Speedway. Doug Coby will return to the track at Caraway Speedway for the North-South Shootout with Tommy Baldwin Racing on Saturday, November 5. MILFORD, Conn. – As a part-time campaign comes to a close on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour in 2022, Doug Coby and the Mayhew Tools No. 10 team are heading south this Thursday to Martinsville Speedway. Set to compete in the Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 200, Coby will look to add the historic track to his wins list and collect the special Grandfather Clock trophy. Although Coby has multiple wins on the Whelen Modified Tour circuit this season, all of them came driving for Tommy Baldwin Racing. In fact, Coby was one of three drivers to help Baldwin Racing seal the owner’s championship on the Tour, which they will celebrate Thursday night. With all eyes set on glory in his own ride, Coby would love to end the season for his personal race team in Victory Lane and give the Mayhew Tools team some well-deserved winning medicine. In a few starts with the team this season at Thompson Speedway, Coby has top-10 finishes in both and has led 77 laps. “We’ve been fast with our team and that’s a good start. It gives us confidence to know that we can compete and lead laps and keep building our notebook with setups that keep tires under us for the long runs,” Coby said. “It’s really hard when you’re racing against teams that have 16 races under their belts and have tried everything and we’re still playing catch-up. Winning at Martinsville and getting the Grandfather Clock, it’s on the bucket list. It would be a huge win for my team and I, and it’s an accomplishment few people have an opportunity to do. There is a ton of history with how far back the Modifieds go at Martinsville and it’s important for our series to race there. A combination of Modified history and being on the big stage with the NASCAR Cup Series… It's great for us.” Martinsville Speedway’s race day schedule begins with practice from 3-4 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at 5 p.m. The green flag for the Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 200 will drop at 8 p.m., and will air live on FloRacing.TV. THOMPSON, Conn. – Early in Sunday’s Sunoco World Series 150 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, Doug Coby had the car to beat in the Mayhew Tools No. 10. Leading the entire first half of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour main event, Coby looked to be in control before the race continued under green all the way until the finish. The car faded a bit in the second half of the race, and Coby finished in the eighth position. However, he was still able to celebrate after the race. Coby joined the Tommy Baldwin Racing celebration, as the team unofficially clinched the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour owner’s championship on Sunday. Coby wheeled the No. 7NY for the team in multiple events during the 2022 season, capturing three feature wins with the group along the way. This Thompson event was behind the wheel of his own Doug Coby Racing entry. “Tommy’s had the best car all year no matter who has been driving it,” Coby said. “I’m happy for Tommy and his team, they are a good group of guys. They are deserving of it and they have been working really hard on their program. It’s neat. As far as the race, we wouldn’t have changed a thing on the car if there was a caution and we pitted. We could have won the race if we had the chance to go in and get tires. I do think we had the best car for a 50 lap run today but just not the best for a 150-lap run.” Doug Coby will return to the track at Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Virginia for the final race of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season on Thursday, October 27. Coby Set For Thompson Return in Mayhew Tools Ride For Whelen Modified Tour World Series 15010/6/2022 By Souza Media
THOMPSON, Conn. – Doug Coby will return to the seat of the No. 10 Mayhew Tools Modified this weekend at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. Set to compete in the Sunoco World Series 150, Coby will compete in the Doug Coby Racing entry looking to build on the speed the team had at Thompson in August. After practicing at the front and qualifying inside the top-five, Coby raced through the pack in the final laps to score a third-place finish. This week, he’s hoping to build on that and get back to Victory Lane. The six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion has won multiple Tour races this year, all with Tommy Baldwin Racing. But he wants to take his own car back to the front and victory lane. “I was really happy with how fast we were with not having a notebook and kind of guessing at the setup to go there with when we were there in August,” Coby said. “There had been some changes with the tires and what others were doing with their cars. To go back to Thompson for the World Series, we have a ton of confidence that we will have a car that can win the race if we do our job during the day.” Thompson’s World Series weekend schedule includes practice and Mayhew Tools qualifying on Saturday, October 8, and the 150-lap Sunoco World Series race on Sunday, October 9. Tickets will be available at the track and the race will also air live on FloRacing.TV for those who can’t make it to Connecticut. RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – Saturday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour visit to Riverhead Raceway ended with a top-five finish for Doug Coby. Driving the Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 7NY, Coby qualified fourth for the Ed Partridge 256, and rode around the top-five for much of the night. With infield pitting a factor for the first time in the history of Whelen Modified Tour racing at Riverhead, the team completed a successful stop and Coby raced to a strong fourth-place finish. The effort was good enough for Tommy Baldwin Racing to continue to hold their owners championship lead with just two races remaining in the Whelen Modified Tour season. It was the sixth top-five finish for Coby driving the 7NY so far in 2022. “It was a solid day,” Coby said. “We laid down a fast lap in practice but then struggled with the car a little bit for the rest of the session. It was a lot better in qualifying, then in the race it was really good on one end of the track, but not so good on the other. We stuck to our plan and our pitting strategy and the guys had the best two-tire stop of anyone out there, which put us in contention at the end. We had only a fourth or fifth place car and that’s where we ended up.” Doug Coby will return to the track in the No. 10 Mayhew Tools machine at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on Sunday, October 9 as part of the Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing. For more information on Doug Coby and Doug Coby Racing, visit DougCobyRacing.com and follow his team Facebook page for the latest updates. MILFORD, Conn. – Earlier in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, Doug Coby parked the Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 7NY in Victory Lane at Riverhead Raceway. The six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion’s victory in May was his third career at the New York quarter-mile, all coming within his last five starts.
After over a decade of trying, Coby scored his first Riverhead win in 2021, driving his own Doug Coby Racing No. 10. After teaming with Baldwin for the first time and winning at Riverhead, the combination also scored another win at Lee USA Speedway together, one week later. Since then, Baldwin has swapped a few different drivers in and out of the car, and Coby has been back in the seat for the last two races – winning at Langley Speedway for the third time this season, and leading 52 laps before finishing seventh at Oswego Speedway. Heading back to Riverhead, the race will mark a first for everyone involved – pit stops in the infield. With a tire change allowed and 256 laps on tap in honor of late track owner Ed Partridge, it will certainly create a new list of challenges for teams to figure out. “The 56 extra laps certainly is going to change things quite a bit,” Coby said. “A lot of guys that couldn’t make their cars work for the whole 200 laps, they have the opportunity to make their car better during the race with the pit stop. I’m not sure ultimately how it is going to shake out with the pit stops, especially with when to pit. There is always the right time to pit and the wrong time to pit. We’re going to go there and have a great car. You have to stay out of trouble and be there at the end.” NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour cars will hit the track for practice at Riverhead at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, with a one-hour session. Mayhew Tools qualifying will take place at 6 p.m. and the drop of the green flag for the Ed Partridge 256 is scheduled for 8 p.m. For those who can’t make it to Long Island, the race will air live on FloRacing.TV.
