 MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR) announced today that six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby will pilot the No. 7NY for select Tour events in 2024. The team will begin the season at New Smyrna Speedway for the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing and the Whelen Modified Tour opener on Saturday, February 10.
The team plans to run seven of the 16 Whelen Modified Tour events. TBR will compete at Richmond Raceway on Friday, March 29, Riverhead Raceway on May 18 and New Hampshire Motor Speedway as part of NASCAR’s National Series weekend on June 22. The combination will return to the track on Wednesday, August 14 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, Saturday, October 5 at North Wilkesboro Speedway and Saturday, October 26 at Martinsville Speedway. “Tommy has a deep racing history in the Modified community and when you drive for him, you know he’s going to bring fast cars to the track,” Coby said. “Having the opportunity to work with them again in 2024 to simply try to win races is something I’m really excited for.” Coby and Baldwin first paired together in 2022 and won events at Riverhead Raceway and Lee USA Speedway in their first two races together. They also picked up a victory at Langley Speedway that season – one that saw Tommy Baldwin Racing seal the Whelen Modified Tour owner’s championship with multiple different drivers.  NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. – Doug Coby and the Tommy Baldwin Racing team were back on the track Saturday night. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour made their debut at North Wilkesboro Speedway and Coby was in contention for the win in the final laps of the Brushy Mountain Powersports 150.
Just before the field took the white flag, a caution flag flew, lining up the action for a green-white-checkered finish. Coby restarted the Mayhew Tools No. 7NY in the second spot, but fell back to eighth-place in the final two laps, fighting a loose car. The team overcame a spin near the halfway point to get themselves in contention to win. While racing three-wide with Burt Myers and Justin Bonsignore, Coby spun in turn one. He charged back through the field with fresh tires, then put himself in contention on the front row after a final pit stop later in the race. MILFORD, Conn. – The Doug Coby and Tommy Baldwin Racing pairing will be back together again this weekend. The Mayhew Tools No. 7NY will be on track on Saturday, September 30 at North Wilkesboro Speedway for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Brushy Mountain Powersports 150. The Whelen Modified Tour visit to the North Carolina oval will be the first in series history. The track was revived recently after many years of being closed. The NASCAR Cup Series All-Star event took place there in May and the Cup Series will be back in 2024 for another All-Star race. Coby is excited to get behind the wheel of a Modified at the track. The last time Coby and Baldwin raced together they sealed the Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup crown at Monadnock Speedway on September 9, with a top-five finish. The group has been part-time for the second half of the season since team owner Tommy Baldwin Jr. announced a cancer diagnosis. The part-time schedule allows Coby and Baldwin to have only one goal: winning the race. “I don’t think any of us truly know how long the cars might last or how hard we might have to go,” Coby said. “I think it will be a track position race. WINCHESTER, N.H. – Doug Coby and Tommy Baldwin Racing returned to NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour competition on Saturday night at Monadnock Speedway and they were celebrating after 150 laps in New Hampshire. Coby finished fifth in the Winchester Fair 150 in the Mayhew Tools 7NY, but the finish was enough for the team to capture the second annual Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup championship crown. The Cup, which included three races at Monadnock Speedway, Lee USA Speedway and back at Monadnock on Saturday night, saw Coby grab three finishes inside the top-six, including a win at Monadnock in May. By winning the Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup, the team collected at least $5,000 in bonus awards. Coby returned to action Saturday for the first time since Thompson Speedway in August. Team owner Tommy Baldwin Jr. announced a cancer diagnosis and the team stepped back from full-time competition and missed the last two races. They couldn’t pass up returning to chase the Granite State Short Track Cup crown. “Just to be here with our family and Tommy battling cancer, I mean, he’s a warrior,” Coby said. “He told us from the beginning that he was going to fight through this and he’s been courageous enough to share his battle and everything on social media, which is uncommon. MOORESVILLE, N.C. – After two races off, Tommy Baldwin Racing announced today that the team will field a Mayhew Tools No. 7NY entry for Doug Coby in this Saturday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour 150 at Monadnock Speedway. Coby and Baldwin enter the event leading the point standings for the Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup, which will conclude Saturday night. The Cup awards a bonus of $5,000 to the team that captures the most points over three events. Coby picked up the win in round one of the Cup at Monadnock back in May and finished sixth in the second race at Lee USA Speedway to enter this weekend in the lead. The team is also eligible for additional bonuses from the Cup, including a lap leader bonus from all three events combined and the best average finish over the three races. The team has the opportunity to collect over $6,400 in bonus money, plus any winnings collected for finishing position on Saturday. It made the decision to attend a no-brainer. Last month, Tommy Baldwin Jr. announced a diagnosis of cancer and is currently undergoing treatments. The team is not returning full-time on the Whelen Modified Tour for the remainder of the season, but will come together to chase the Cup crown at Monadnock. Baldwin is selling Baldwin Strong stickers on his website, TommyBaldwinRacing.com, and donating final proceeds to the Matheny School. His goal is to share awareness and have everyone know they are all in it together when fighting through health issues. “After winning at Monadnock in May and leading the Cup standings heading into Saturday, we really wanted to make this event happen,” team owner Tommy Baldwin Jr. said. “I’m thankful for everyone’s support through my announcement and treatments - it’s been incredible and our entire family couldn’t be more grateful. With the race now 150 laps, you will probably be able to go harder and really battle for spots earlier in the race. The Mayhew Tools, Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 7NY was strong early, jumping out front and leading laps. The team rolled to pit road at the halfway point, along with the rest of the field, for fresh Hoosier rubber, and right after the stop, Coby chased the back bumper of eventual winner Justin Bonsignore looking to pounce to get back out front. Race Advance by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – For the first time, Doug Coby will sit behind the wheel of a car prepared by Tommy Baldwin at Thompson Speedway on Wednesday night. Although the two have worked together just over one year, won races, and competed at various tracks, Thompson hasn’t come up yet on the list with Coby driving the No. 7NY. Now, the opportunity is here for Wednesday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Thompson 150 presented by FloSports. Entering the thick of the summer and the championship battle, Coby will need a strong run at Thompson to help himself crawl back into that title battle. He is currently fourth, 42 points out of the lead, with eight races remaining. If he wants to capture his seventh championship in 2023, the time is now to start making ground. Coby has watched Baldwin have speed at Thompson over the years. The No. 7NY has been to Victory Lane in multiple Open Modified shows in the past few years and won the pole with Jimmy Blewett driving last year during the Whelen Modified Tour event in August. In his own career at Thompson, Coby has six wins to his credit. He finished third in this race last year driving his own No. 10, and led 77 laps in the World Series last October in his own ride. “Thompson is a track where you can move around and find what works better for you and your car,” Coby said. “It can be really fun when you come in for tires on a pit stop and then everyone tries to get back through the field. We will see how it unfolds this time around. It’s probably a lot of the drivers' odds-on favorite track to race as long as the pavement works with you and allows for a good race. Tommy’s car seems to have been good on the long run there the last few times out and it usually comes down to managing tires and not falling off on the long run lately at Thompson. I have a ton of starts there and I was lucky enough to go on a nice run of winning with the No. 2 team to win some races there. In the Nu-Way Auto Parts 150, Coby ran in and around the top-five for the entirety of the race.
A caution flag just after halfway brought the field to pit road for adjustments, and the team sent Coby back on the track looking to gain ground towards another win. However, it wasn’t in the cards on Saturday. Coby challenged Matt Hirschman for third, gave up the spot, and looked to be in good position to run fourth until a late caution. On the restart, Coby was racing hard on the outside lane when two other cars in front of him tangled, and he fell back to seventh, where he would finish. MILFORD, Conn. – With the Claremont Motorsports Park event officially canceled on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Saturday’s event at Lancaster Motorplex will mark the beginning of the second half of the 2023 season. The Nu-Way Auto Parts 150 will bring Doug Coby and the Mayhew Tools, Tommy Baldwin Racing team to upstate New York for a battle with the No. 7NY. Coby has one previous start at Lancaster in the only Whelen Modified Tour event at the track back in 2021, where he finished ninth. Although he was multiple laps down and tried to get them back during the race, he had speed in his own No. 10 Mayhew Tools entry, driving up through the pack into what would have been a top-five position if he was on the lead lap. Lancaster is a facility that includes both a drag strip and the oval track on the same property and it can present some unique challenges compared to other tracks. “The challenges of a track like Lancaster are definitely there,” Coby said. “When you come onto the frontstretch which is a drag strip, you have to know where you are going to be fast, and where to hit your marks consistently. We have to go there and get our bearings in practice and remember what works and what doesn’t as a team. Tommy was fast there last time with Jon McKennedy driving - they won the pole and led 89 laps before getting tangled late. With the speed both of us had last time, we should be able to work well to come up with something strong together. Race Advance by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – On top of trying to win the Claremont Clash 150 on Saturday night at Claremont Motorsports Park, Doug Coby will be looking to seal a mid-season championship title on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. The Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup is a three-race series put together by event promoter JDV Productions that merges events at Monadnock Speedway (May 6), Lee USA Speedway (May 27) and Claremont Motorsports Park (July 29) together – with a point-fund for the top-three finishers and multiple additional special awards. Entering the finale at Claremont, Coby holds a three-point lead over Jon McKennedy, who is not entered for Saturday’s race. He’s currently five points ahead of the defending Cup champion Matt Hirschman and seven ahead of Austin Beers. “It’s a little bit of extra money on the line and that’s the kind of thing that really helps the teams in our series,” Coby said. “The Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup is cool for the fans to follow, cool for the drivers and it’s definitely brought in a few local drivers to run with us.” On top of the Cup battle, Coby will be looking to tackle Claremont, one of the toughest tracks on the schedule for the Whelen Modified Tour. He only has limited laps at Claremont in both Open Modifieds and racing on the Whelen Modified Tour - one race in each. Last year, he drove the Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 7NY to a ninth-place finish. Coby enters the race third in the Whelen Modified Tour point standings, but more than 30 points out with nine races remaining. From here on out, he plans to chase the wins to get back in it. “It’s only going to be my third time going to Claremont,” Coby said. “It’s a tricky place and we definitely didn’t hit it right last year, but we’ve made some improvements for this year. We struggled at Monadnock last year and we changed some stuff and won there this year, so we’re confident. It’s a track position kind of race. The goal is to have a better car in qualifying and in the beginning of the race to start up front.” “The wins get you the bonus points. If someone you’re racing in the points wins and you finish third, it’s not a small swing with the way the bonus points work.
