Doug Coby Looks To Seal Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup at Claremont

MILFORD, Conn. – On top of trying to win the Claremont Clash 150 on Saturday night at Claremont Motorsports Park, Doug Coby will be looking to seal a mid-season championship title on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. The Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup is a three-race series put together by event promoter JDV Productions that merges events at Monadnock Speedway (May 6), Lee USA Speedway (May 27) and Claremont Motorsports Park (July 29) together – with a point-fund for the top-three finishers and multiple additional special awards.

Entering the finale at Claremont, Coby holds a three-point lead over Jon McKennedy, who is not entered for Saturday’s race. He’s currently five points ahead of the defending Cup champion Matt Hirschman and seven ahead of Austin Beers.

“It’s a little bit of extra money on the line and that’s the kind of thing that really helps the teams in our series,” Coby said. “The Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup is cool for the fans to follow, cool for the drivers and it’s definitely brought in a few local drivers to run with us.”

On top of the Cup battle, Coby will be looking to tackle Claremont, one of the toughest tracks on the schedule for the Whelen Modified Tour. He only has limited laps at Claremont in both Open Modifieds and racing on the Whelen Modified Tour - one race in each. Last year, he drove the Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 7NY to a ninth-place finish. Coby enters the race third in the Whelen Modified Tour point standings, but more than 30 points out with nine races remaining.

From here on out, he plans to chase the wins to get back in it.

“It’s only going to be my third time going to Claremont,” Coby said. “It’s a tricky place and we definitely didn’t hit it right last year, but we’ve made some improvements for this year. We struggled at Monadnock last year and we changed some stuff and won there this year, so we’re confident. It’s a track position kind of race. The goal is to have a better car in qualifying and in the beginning of the race to start up front.”

“The wins get you the bonus points. If someone you’re racing in the points wins and you finish third, it’s not a small swing with the way the bonus points work. It has to be a winner mentality from here on out.”

The Claremont Motorsports Park schedule includes NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice from 2:25-3:25 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at 5:45 p.m. The estimated green time for the Claremont 150 is 8:30 p.m., live on FloRacing.TV. Racing for more than 25 years, Doug Coby is a six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion and one of the top short-track drivers to come from the state of Connecticut.
