Story By Souza Media/Kyle Souza MILFORD, Conn. -- Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby will make one of the biggest starts of his racing career this Saturday, June 12, and it won’t be behind the wheel of a Modified. Coby will compete in the inaugural event for the Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) Series at Stafford Motor Speedway, his home track. Coby will compete against former NASCAR champions and veterans, the most recent Indy 500 winner, and more of racing’s top challengers in front of a sold out crowd. Operated by NASCAR Hall of Fame members Tony Stewart and Ray Evernham, SRX will run a six-event schedule in 2021 at some of the top short-tracks in the United States. The series includes drivers from multiple different racing disciplines -- from NASCAR, to IndyCar, and everything in between. The cars -- identical for each driver -- were designed by Evernham. Coby will be competing against 2021 Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves, Bill Elliott, Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip, Greg Biffle, Bobby Labonte, Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti, and more. Coby was invited to the event to represent Stafford, and the region where he’s put together a successful resume of winning races and championships. The Milford, Connecticut, native, as a six-time tour champion, has 30 career wins in NASCAR's touring series. Twelve of those have come at Stafford -- where Coby has 30 wins overall -- including victories in the SK Modifieds, Late Models and Pro Stocks. He also has two titles at the half-mile -- one in the Late Models -- and the other in the Pro Stocks. He’s excited to represent his home track in front of a packed house. “The excitement has been building, from the snippets on social media, to the cars, to the video game and everything else,” Coby said. “I’m in a video game.. And I think that’s pretty cool. This is a big deal for the short-track industry, for the tracks and drivers to be featured… that’s why I wanted to be part of this. It will be a fun, but challenging experience. Growing up at Stafford, and being able to represent Stafford, the short-track community and especially the modified community, it’s important. The fact that SRX could have gone in any direction and they chose to stick to short-tracks and getting millions of eyes on these facilities.. It’s cool. Hopefully this produces more attendance and social media following for other events. It’s good for the business. We have to find a good balance to keep the short-tracks alive and this is injecting a lot of life into Stafford and other tracks.” General admission tickets for the event are sold out and no pit passes will be available at the track. The race will air live on CBS TV on Saturday from 8-10 p.m., where fans can watch Coby compete. While Coby races at Stafford, Chase Dowling will wheel the No. 10 Mayhew Tools entry for Doug Coby Racing in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour action at Oswego Speedway.
